What NLP is and the practical techniques you can use yourself

As long as you are careful when choosing your NLP-teacher and really look for high quality and ethics, then part of the advantage with NLP has is that it´s all practical techniques you can take home and keep working with yourself. This makes you keep the skills the training already gave you, and keep the ability to develop them and become even better.

Meta language and Milton language

NLP is based on how language is shaped by our thoughts, and how you can follow that trace back to see how you think and how you can change this to become more useful in your life. Meta language is the first you learn to work with here, and with it you increase your ability to communicate precisely and clearly, getting the message across that you really want to. Sometimes, however, it can be useful to be very general or even unclear. Milton language teaches you very precise ways to make your language vague, so that people can access the solutions they have in their own unconscious mind. Milton language is for example very useful to know in health-situations, as it can help patients heal faster without them understanding how.

Deleions

Deletions are like the title to this paragraph. Everybody removes information and deletes parts of it in various ways. It is incredibly effective to understand and see what informaion you yourself delete as you communicate with others. This is even more important if you work as a team leader, manager, CEO or similar, as deletions from you can affect a whole team, project, or possibly even a whole company´s well-being and success.

Frames

Filters

There are three main filters that we use in our way to interact with the world. Here you learn how to see your own, listen for others, and learn how to communicate much more efficiently through talking to them in their view of the world to get the right information across. This also gives you great ability to understand how their reality works, and how you can work together with that better, or help them change where they are stuck and can´t see a way out without help.

Outcomes

Outcomes are the goals you want to accomplish. Here we get a sense of the progression you use to make your outcomes clearer and work realistically step by step to fruition. The actual core of this is called outcome orientation, which simply helps you to automatically look for solutions instead of problems. Once this is done, you learn the techniques for how to clean up the mess and stress in your head and see the solutions more clearly and effectively, and which specific tools will help you accomplish them.

Rapport

Rapport increases your ability to make contact with another person – and with yourself. With these techniques you learn what it feels like to have good rapport with someone, and how you can create this instantly. These are techniques that are particularly important if you are working with people in any capacity. Even if you only have a few seconds, you can make them count. This will increase your skills in doing your job and at the same time feeling better yourself.

Pacing

This builds on rapport. Once you have rapport, you pace the person. You mirror their system and their view of the world for a short time, to allow you to more easily communicate with them. This in turn creates the stable base for Leading, where you can help them move in a direction that would help their life or the task at hand and make it flow more smoothly.

Ecology

All these techniques need to be founded in what is called Ecology: how does your tree affect the trees that grow around you? Ecology is the corner-stone of all change you initiate. You always want to do an ecology-check to make sure you have internal ecology – is this really working with who I am? – and external ecology – is this working with my surroundings, my co-workers, my family? There are versions of NLP that avoids ecology so as to create skills in manipulation, but the version that we work with at Small Change focuses clearly on ecology in all applications. Ecology enables you to make ethical and balanced decisions about positive change in your life, and how you affect others.

Anchors and creating useful states

We all create anchors to different states of mind. Songs are anchors, putting you straight back into the situation and emotions linked to it. Alla människor skapar ankare till olika sinnestillstånd. People´s faces are anchors, your workplace is an anchor – all of these simply release stored and specific images, states and reactions in you. A very important part of NLP is how you learn to create more effective anchors yourself, and how to neutralize those that might be negative for you in your everyday life. This also gives you increased abilities to deal with situations you find difficult, as well as create very clear ability to think in situations that normally confuses or affect you. Setting anchors is a very important technique to learn, but it has to be founded on Ecology to make it work well for you and the trees that grow around you in your life.
